What we do

Save yourself time and money. We can take care of gorse, variegated thistle, weeds and other troublesome vegetation.

Gorse Spraying

Gorse spraying is a vital agricultural technique for managing the invasive gorse shrub. It entails the precise application of herbicides or pesticides to control gorse growth while protecting surrounding vegetation and ecosystems, helping maintain land productivity and biodiversity.

Scrub Cutting

Scrub cutting is a land management technique that involves cutting and removing dense, woody vegetation using specialized equipment. It serves various purposes like preventing wildfires, improving grazing areas, and enhancing recreational spaces, contributing to the maintenance of balanced ecosystems and human land use.

Variegated Thistle Weed control

Variegated Thistle can spread uncontrollably through pasture and farmland and is considered a noxious weed in New Zealand. Clumps of thistle can grow to a huge size which can impact on crop yield and livestock. Regular weed spraying can help you control the impact to your property.

Fence Line weed Spraying

Keeping your fence line clear by spraying weeds is a great way to keep your voltage going through your fence lines. Stock will also respect the sprayed areas and fence lines.

Let’s talk about Gorse

The reasons why you might want to control the gorse on your property.

AGRICULTURAL COSTS

Farmers and landowners incur significant costs in managing and controlling gorse infestations. This includes the expense of herbicides, machinery, and labor required for effective gorse control.

FIRE HAZARD

Gorse is highly flammable and poses a significant fire risk, especially during dry seasons. Gorse fires can devastate large areas of land, threaten homes, and harm wildlife.

STOCK & AGRICULTURE

Gorse can significantly reduce the productivity of agricultural land by displacing valuable pasture species. Its spiky nature makes it unpalatable for many livestock, reducing the available forage. Gorse can also interfere with farm operations and access.

East Coast Gorse

A little background on our company, our experience and why we do what we do.

Over the past 18 years, we’ve dedicated ourselves to refining our company, making it highly efficient and cost-effective in the field of noxious weed control. The key to successful spraying lies in achieving optimal plant coverage and utilizing the correct chemicals. After experimenting with various spraying methods, we’ve found that mistblowers consistently deliver the best results.

Our commitment extends beyond just the equipment we use; we’ve carefully selected and invested in a skilled workforce capable of tackling the demanding nature of this work. Additionally, we’ve upgraded our vehicles, modifying side-by-sides and ATVs to meet our specific needs. Equipping our team with headset radios ensures seamless communication, facilitating coordinated efforts and minimizing downtime.

Our track record speaks for itself. Our unparalleled efficiency and expertise enable us to complete jobs with exceptional precision. We’ve even helped farmers reduce their weed spray bills by half while effectively controlling twice as much gorse compared to previous contractors they’ve worked with.

Covering all weed control, we offer spot clearing, general control of weeds, fence line spraying and scrub cutting (land clearing). We also cover most areas in the lower north island.

  1. Employing dedicated and hardworking staff
  2. Equipping our team with the right tools, including radios and well-modified vehicles
  3. Maintaining a high level of knowledge and skill in our field, ensuring every job is done to perfection

Does a great job

Sam has always been our go to firm for gorse control on our hill country farm, on the East coast of the Wairarapa. Our farm is steep, with broken gullies, and scattered gorse bushes, so requires able bodied and fit workers to carry backpack sprayers. Over the years Sam has employed a number of wonderful men. If he is unable to recruit the right people, we will have gorse being left for too long between sprays, which will undo all our years of hard work, (and huge amounts of money) if it is allowed to reseed.

We manage to spray some areas of the farm ourselves each year, but cannot keep the gorse maintained without Sam and his team. Sam and his family do a great job of supporting his staff, and they mix well in the rural communities, playing local rugby etc.

The weeds in this country are getting to be a very big problem and we must all do our bit.

Sarah and Rodger Broughton, Homewood

Competent and enthusiastic

For approximately six years Sam Pearce has provided us with a gorse spraying service throughout the Wairarapa.

It is a pleasure to watch these workers running over the hills almost competing for the next gorse bush!

It is taken over 20 years from the last gorse spraying contractor to find one as competent and enthusiastic as Sam and his team.

Mike Warren, Turanganui

Effective and efficient

Controlling gorse hill country is an on going battle for a lot of south Wairarapa farmers.

We have found Sam’s ground crew to be very effective and efficient hitting regrowth at the appropriate time, before the plant can mature and require more chemical and time to kill.

Teams like Sam’s have the ability to achieve pin point accuracy, unlike a helicopter where it’s more of a blanket application increasing the chances of killing not target species.

We have had real progress with our gorse problem over the years using East Coast Gorse and we want them to be around in the future to keep the progress going.

Monte Warren, Martinborough

An essential service

We use the services of this business for over 3 weeks every year- they provide the essential service of weed spraying on our properties. We do not have enough labor to carry out this work ourselves.

Massive reduction in gorse…

We’ve been using east coast gorse sprayers for the last…. I’ve found Sam exceptionally good to deal with and his crew is very professional and efficient on the job.

We have seen a massive reduction on gorse and variegated thistles over the year.

I highly recommend ECG sprayers for any farm weed control.
